‘Landscapes of Motherhood’
M16 Artspace, Canberra, 2025
Exhibition Statement
Landscapes of Motherhood is a solo exhibition of acrylic and mixed media paintings by Kelsie White, reflecting her ongoing experience of early parenthood. These works explore the emotional and transformative nature of motherhood, expressed through dreamlike landscapes that blur the boundaries between real and imagined environments.
Each painting captures a moment of transition, such as her son’s first steps, his early words, and the shifting dynamics of their relationship. White uses carefully considered colour palettes to evoke specific emotional responses, drawing the viewer into the inner world of each piece. Layered textures and abstracted forms serve as visual metaphors for the complexities of memory, identity, and maternal experience.
As her son grows from dependence to independence, White’s work mirrors her own evolution as a mother. It navigates both the deeply personal and universal aspects of this role. The resulting landscapes are not literal places, but emotional terrains that offer space to process, reflect, and connect.
Through Landscapes of Motherhood, White offers a candid and resonant portrayal of early motherhood. Her work reflects its intensity, tenderness, and transformation, and invites viewers to contemplate their own emotional landscapes and experiences of change.
